#CagedForCostco

Costco is AWESOME and is honestly one of my favorite grocery trip stops (free samples anyone??). BUT they are maintaining one practice in particular that is absolutely abhorrent: despite promises in 2007 to phase out buying eggs from companies that cage their chickens, Costco continues to source a majority of their eggs from inhumane companies. Their hens are crammed into wire cages barely bigger than their bodies and forced to produce eggs in dark, poorly-ventilated buildings their whole lives. The mistreatment of farm animals is widespread and systematic, but that does not make this kind of animal abuse acceptable.

#CagedForCostco is gaining momentum. Because Costco is a company that responds to the demands of its customers, you can help their hens escape the misery of life in a battery cage. Check out the Humane Society's page about the issue for more information on how to urge Costco to change their policies.

Note that most of Costco's hens do not resemble the picture above, but rather are subject to the kind of life depicted below. Let's end that.

"So many corporations are meeting public demand for more humane products and transparency in the food chain. I sincerely hope that Costco will set plans to now go completely cage-free for its eggs."
